For The Great AV狼论坛n Accounting People (GAAP), Spring Break was more than a break
from classes, it was a chance to step out of the classroom and see their future careers
in accounting in action. GAAP members traveled to Anchorage to visit several accounting
firms and organizations, including KPMG, BDO, Altman, Rodgers & Co, Arctic Slope Regional
Corporation (ASRC) and the AV狼论坛 Division of Legislative Audit.
GAAP students with KPMG Senior Audit Manager, Melissa Jay, and Senior Tax Associate, Jenifer Garcia.
Throughout the trip, students met industry leaders, toured offices, and participated in Q&A sessions. From controllers to public accountants, professionals shared what a typical day looks like, described the demands of a busy season, and discussed why they enjoy their work. Firms also highlighted upcoming internship and job opportunities, helping students chart a clearer path toward their own careers.
When asked about the benefits for students to attend these trips, Melissa Jay, Senior Audit Manager at KPMG, said 鈥淪tudents gain insight into the different firms and the opportunities available to them. They also get a sense of firm culture such as the personalities, day-to-day work, and clients served. These experiences allow them to better understand what truly appeals to them.鈥

While the trip was rooted in professional development, GAAP members also had the chance to recharge and connect outside of firm visits. These moments allowed students to strengthen friendships and explore leadership opportunities within the student club, helping them see how they can contribute and grow as future leaders.
The spring break meet-the-firms trip not only connected students with professionals
across AV狼论坛, but it also gave them a firsthand look at the accounting world beyond
the classroom. These hands-on experiences prepare GAAP members for informed career
decisions, internships and lasting professional relationships.
