UAF Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning offers a variety of non-credit bearing classes accessible to members of the community without the requirements of typical college courses. Many of these courses are practical, hands-on workshop style classes taught by local experts.

WINTERmester courses:
Texture Techniques: Palette Knife Painting Workshop
Instructor: Allison Juneau
Meets: January 3, Saturday, 10 am - 3 pm
Location: Art 303, UAF Campus
Description: Palette knife painting, sometimes referred to as “impasto” painting,
is a fun and engaging way to create paintings with a beautifully textured and sculptural
surface. Work with artist Allison Juneau to learn methods of mixing and applying paint
with a knife, silicone tools, and even household items to create interesting textures.
This workshop is suitable for both new and experienced painters, and participants
can work with either oils or acrylics. If you would like to work with oils, please
bring your own paint. Impasto medium (for both oil and acrylic) will be available
for everyone to use. Practicing acrylic painters may want to bring their own paint,
but acrylic paint will be available for those who need it. Painting tools and wood
panels will be provided. Everyone should bring an apron.

Bicycle Maintenance and Repair Introduction to Pickleball
Instructor: Simon Rakower
Meets: January 5 - 9, Monday - Friday, 6 pm - 9 pm
Location: 359 O'Neill, UAF
Description: This comprehensive, practical, hands-on bicycle maintenance and repair
class focuses on road and mountain bikes. We will cover drive chain, shifting, brakes,
wheels (straightening), tires, tubes (flats), steering systems, cable replacement,
and lubrication. We will also review the geometry and physics of the bicycle, the
world's most efficient means of transportation. Students who have taken this class
before or are not new to bicycle maintenance will be able to complete a bicycle project
of their choosing. Students will work with the instructor to map out the project(s)
to be completed during this in-depth course. All students must bring a bicycle to
class.

Meets: January 6 - 22, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12 pm - 1 pm
Location: SRC, UAF Campus
Description: Are you curious to try out the fastest growing sport in the USA? Pickleball
is a net sport that takes elements of tennis and ping pong, combining them into a
game that is accessible for kids as well as senior citizens. This course will cover
the basics of serving, dinking, volleys, lobs, rules of game play and more! Six sessions
will have you feeling confident to join in on Open and Relish Play with the Farthest
North Pickleball Club. Beware, this game is quite addicting and very social too! This
course is ideal for brand new players, or players looking for more practice. An intermediate class will be coming in February!

Instructor: Margo Klass
Meets: January 9 - 11, Friday 6 pm - 8:30 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Murie 203, UAF Campus
Description: This workshop explores the historic binding technique of sewing on cords,
re-imagined for contemporary bookmaking. Traditionally hidden within the spine, the
cords in this variation are intentionally exposed, creating a striking spine. Instead
of folded sections, the text block will be built from single pages of richly colored
Japanese Momigami paper. Each page incorporates a thread embedded along the spine
edge, making it possible to sew single pages across, rather than up and down, the
spine. Participants will personalize their elegantly chunky books with content of
their own design using collage, stamping, drawing, or writing.

Put Your Spin on It!
Instructor: Patricia Carlson
Meets: January 10 - 11, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 5 pm
Location: Art 403, UAF Campus
Description: Make a patterned sterling silver spinner ring for yourself in this two-day
beginner-friendly metalsmithing class. Learn to use the tools to pattern, shape, solder,
and finish your personalized ring. Practice in copper first, check your size, and
then use your new skills to make your final sterling project. Bring your lunch and
spend the weekend creating!

Instructor: Mary Albanese
Meets: January 12 - 16, Monday - Friday, 12 pm - 4 pm
Location: Virtual
Description: Following a brief lecture on the life and style of Sydney Laurence, we will study images of his works and re-create them. We will also discuss Fred Machetanz. Students will explore and learn their styles through their own paintings, capturing and recreating elements of the master's work, focusing on elements of composition, color scheme, and brush stroke techniques. Students are to sign-in ready to paint with paints (oils or acrylic work best), brushes, and canvases. 8 x 10-inch canvases are a good size to start. Recommended paint colors: black, white, yellow ochre, cobalt blue, sap green, alizarin crimson, and yellow hansa.

Introduction to Ceramics Hand-Building
Instructor: Tamara Want
Meets: January 20 - February 10, Tuesday, 10 am - 12:30 pm
Location: Raven City CLAY Studio, Fairbanks
Description: Build your own beautiful, functional pottery from the ground up in this
multi-session hand-building class! Perfect for beginners and those looking to expand
their skills, this course will guide you through creating your own set of kitchen-ready
ceramics, including a mug and tea bag holder, textured tray, and a honey pot. You’ll
learn slab, coil, and pinch techniques to shape and build your forms, as well as how
to refine, decorate, and prepare your pieces for firing. Each project is designed
to build your confidence and help you create functional art you’ll be proud to use
every day.

Knitting for Beginners: Knit a Hat
Instructor: Ginny Kinne
Meets: January 23, 26, 30, Friday, Monday & Friday, 6 pm - 9 pm
Location: Murie 107, UAF
Description: This course is designed for brand-new knitters and those who have recently
learned to knit and want to build confidence with the basics. During this class, students
will learn fundamental knitting techniques, the language used, and the materials involved.
We will explore the differences between Continental and English-style knitting, learn
the knit and purl stitches, and practice identifying and fixing common mistakes. You’ll
also learn about essential tools, yarn types, and what’s truly needed to start and
finish a project. By the end of the course, participants will have completed a cozy
hat and gained the skills to keep on knitting! Yarn and needles will be provided.

Fresh Start Fitness 
Instructor: Gavin Meggert
Meets: January 26 - March 4, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:15-6:15 pm
Location: Great Hall, UAF Campus
Description: This class is designed for beginners and anyone returning to exercise
after a break. We will utilize simple bodyweight and band exercises to reduce the
risk of injury, improve balance, and maximize mobility and body function. Each session
will focus on safe and effective exercises that prepare you for everyday life, while
providing you with the tools to keep moving forward. You will be able to continue
doing all the exercises at home — no gym needed! No experience is required. Bands
will be provided; please bring a yoga mat. Join us and start your fitness journey
this spring!

Meets: January 31 and February 1, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Murie 105, UAF Campus
Description: Do you have hundreds, or even thousands, of photos from a favorite trip
or special event hiding on your phone or computer? In this two-day workshop, you’ll
learn practical strategies for culling and curating your images to find the true highlights.
With guided support, you’ll edit down to a meaningful collection of 25 “best hits”
and design a beautiful digital photo book using a simple, user-friendly platform that
you can continue to use at home. Along the way, you’ll develop habits and tools for
managing your photo library, ensuring your memories are organized, accessible, and
ready to share. Participants will be encouraged to have prints made of a selection
of their photographs. Please expect to order and pick up your prints (at Walgreens,
Walmart, or Fred's) between the Saturday and Sunday classes. Prints will cost approximately
$10. Please bring your laptop or tablet. We will break for lunch both days.

Weaving: Weekend Wool Scarf
With the Fairbanks Weavers' and Spinners' Guild
Meets: January 31 and February 1, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Davis Hall on the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds (Yellow Building)
Description: This course introduces students to weaving on a multi-shaft loom. No
prior experiences is required. Looms are pre-warped and ready to weave. Over the course
of one weekend, students will weave a plain weave scarf and learn hem stitching and
wet finishing techniques and will leave the course with a finished scarf.
Cost: $200

Meets: February 3, 5, 10, 11, 17, 19, 24, 26, March 3 and 5 (please note that there
is no class on 2/12. That class will take place on Wednesday, 2/11. Tuesdays and Thursdays,
12 pm - 1 pm
Location:SRC, UAF Campus
Description: This course will build on the basic skills and knowledge of pickleball.
If you are familiar with the game and it’s scoring, this class will help incorporate
more of the situational strategies used in the game. Participants will learn how to
execute drop shots, practice communication with your doubles partner, how and when
to lob, and build confidence at decision-making and court positioning. This class
meets for five weeks, please note the special February 11 session.

From Click to Finish: Weekend Photo & Editing Intensive
Instructor: JR Ancheta
Meets: February 21 and 22, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 3 pm
Location: Murie 105, UAF Campus
Description: Learn to tell a story through your photos from the moment you take the
shot to the final polished image. This weekend workshop begins with an exciting field
session at the start of the Yukon Quest 80-Mile Fun Run, where you’ll practice capturing
dynamic scenes and action shots. Back on campus, you’ll dive into editing essentials
to enhance and refine your work. Bring your digital camera or phone, as well as a
laptop or tablet for editing. Participants will need their own transportation and
should pack a lunch for both days.

Sew it Up! Creative Sewing and Upcycling
Instructor: Marla Statscewich
Meets: February 24, 26, March 3, 5, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 pm - 8:30 pm
Location: 412 Gruening, UAF
Description: Dust off your sewing machine and get ready to create! In this hands-on
class, you'll learn sewing basics while giving new life to old materials. Projects
include a cozy pillowcase, a purse made from repurposed jeans, and a one-of-a-kind
"frankenhoodie" crafted from hoodie parts. Whether you're new to sewing or just getting
back into it, you'll build skills and confidence while having fun. Please make sure
your machine is in good working condition before class. You will need a working sewing
machine, 1 1/2 yards of cotton fabric, and 1/2 yard of contrasting fabric for the
pillow cases, and two hoodies from your closet or from Value Village, approximately
the same size. Need a machine? Contact Summer Sessions — limited machines are available
to borrow during class sessions.

Next Steps in Knitting: Knit a Pair of Mittens
Instructor: Ginny Kinne
Meets: February 27, March 2, and March 6, Friday, Monday & Friday, 6 pm - 9 pm
Location: 107 Murie, UAF Campus
Description: Ready to take your knitting to the next level? This class is designed
for beginning knitters who already know how to knit, purl, increase, and decrease.
Building on your existing skills, you’ll learn how to knit a pair of mittens, a fun
and practical project that introduces shaping, thumb gussets, and working in the round.
Along the way, we’ll review essential techniques, troubleshoot common challenges,
and discuss options for customizing your mittens. Come ready to grow your skills and
leave with warm hands and new confidence in your knitting! Participants must provide
their own yarn and needles for this class. You will need one skein of Malabrigo Rasta
(or 90-100 yards of super bulky wool yarn), and size 10.5-11 US 40" circular needles
(ChiaoGoo 40" Lace Red Stainless Steel Knitting Needles US11 are a great option).
The price of high quality yarn and needles will be about $40. You can purchase these
needles and Malabrigo Rasta locally or online. Contact Summer Sessions if you need
purchasing suggestions.

Instructor: Emily Smola
Meets: March 19 - April 23, Thursdays, 6 pm - 7:30 pm
Location: SRC, UAF Campus
Description: Join us for a fun-filled six-week intro to rock climbing course at the
SRC climbing wall! This course will teach you the basics of rock climbing, so that
you can enjoy this amazing activity. Topics that we will cover include belay technique,
basic climbing movement, anchor building, indoor/ outdoor climbing comparisons, how
to best use each climbing hold type, and how to manage the risks involved with climbing.
We want to set you up for success, enabling you to enjoy rock climbing and achieve
your goals.
Cost: $125
All registrations for Non-credit Short Classes are completed through CampDoc. Please visit the Campdoc website at to create a profile and register for classes. If you have previously registered with CampDoc, you will not need to create a new profile.
Payment can be made during registration through CampDoc. Please note that Non-credit Short Classes require a $25.00 non-refundable deposit that must be paid at the time of registration. The final payment is due 1 week before the class start date. If you register for a class and decide not to attend, you MUST drop the course via CampDoc a week before the start date or you will be charged for the full class. How do I find out more information about Parking?
If your Non-credit Short Class takes place on campus between 8 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday, you will be required to have a current parking decal or short term parking permit displayed in your vehicle.
